How to make a rap song when you have never made one

A rap song is simpler than it sounds: a topic, lines that rhyme, and a rhythm you can say out loud. The hard parts are usually finding the first line and finding a beat that fits, and that is the part a rap maker can take over.

Here you only decide what the rap is about and who is performing. The lyrics, the beat and the voices are generated for you, and the result is a short vertical video of you and a friend delivering it. Nothing is sampled from an existing track.

If you would rather start from words, write them in the free lyrics tool, then come back and turn them into the video. If you want to write your own and have them sung exactly, plans include that.

Not sure what to rap about?

Draft the words first in the free rap lyrics generator. It writes a rhyming two-voice verse from any topic, and you can bring the topic and style straight back here.

Draft lyrics first

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose what it is about

One concrete subject: a win, a trip, a rivalry, a person. The more specific the topic, the more your rap sounds like you.

  2. 2

    Add the two performers

A clear photo of each person, adults who agreed to appear. A rap duet needs a second voice, so the verses are split between you.

  3. 3

    Render and share

About three minutes later you have a 12-second clip. Download it, post it, or send it to the group chat.

Example lyrics

Written by the same tool. Each press of the button gives a new set.

Hype · the team win

Topic: two teammates who just won, hyping each other up.

  1. 1: Clock hits nine and the lights go low
  2. 2: Two of us ready to run the show
  3. 1: I bring the hook, you bring the heat
  4. 2: Every line we trade lands right on the beat
  5. 1: Started with a topic, now we’ve got a song
  6. 2: Took us ten minutes, and it’s hitting strong.

Chill · the rainy Sunday

Topic: a slow Sunday morning with coffee and rain.

  1. 1: Sunday rain on the window pane
  2. 2: Coffee’s warm, nothing to explain
  3. 1: Slow down the tempo, let the cool air in
  4. 2: Two voices easy, that’s how we begin.

The parts of a rap song, in plain words

  • The topic

Everything hangs off one idea. "Our road trip" is a topic; "life" is not. Pick something you could describe in a sentence.

  • The hook

A short line or two that comes back. If someone remembers one thing, it is the hook, so make it the catchiest line.

  • The verses

Where the story lives. In a duet each person takes a turn, and the second answers or tops the first.

  • The rhymes

Line endings that sound alike: low and show, heat and beat. Pairs of lines (couplets) are the easiest pattern to follow.

  • The flow

How the words sit on the beat. Short lines with a clear stress keep it easy to deliver, especially on camera.

  • The beat

Tempo and mood. Hype is fast and loud, Chill is slow and warm. The style you pick sets the beat for you.

Make your rap song better

  • Write for two people

Give each performer their own voice: one confident, one playful. Contrast is what makes a duet fun to watch.

  • Keep lines short

Six to eight words per line is easy to deliver and easy to read as a caption.

  • Put the funniest line last

Twelve seconds is short. End on the best one so people replay it.

  • Match the style to the occasion

Hype for wins, Funny for friends, Sweet for couples, Chill for late nights. The wrong style is the most common reason a rap feels off.
